MLK is an iconic civil rights leader because he never made "white people" the villain. He knew many white people supported racially equality and that he would be no better than racist white people if he pigeonholed an entire race. He didn't stoop to their level.

The reason the LGBTQ community has made such huge strides in recent years--including pride night at major sporting events--is because there isn't a sea of vocal LGBTQs admonishing "all straight people."
