I’m Getting Fitter As I Get Older

3 simple habits make all the difference

Throughout my life, I have done terrible things to my body. It’s astonishing that it still talks to me, but the older I get, the more it communicates.

So, while it’s true that I’m getting fitter as I get older, the whole truth is that I didn’t exactly set the bar high in my youth.

I smoked a pack of Marlboro reds a day from the time I was 18 into my early 30s, and from 18 to 24, I was a heavy drinker, weed smoker, and assorted drug user.

During this time, most of which was in the '90s, I was the lead singer of a hard rock band gigging five nights per week, playing in smoke-filled venues, and getting to sleep at 3 or 4 am.

My father died at age 64 after decades of smoking and drinking, but my grandfather lived to 88 having stopped smoking in his 40s and only having the occasional drink. For me, the writing was on the wall.

The first habit is a no-brainer…

  1. Don’t drink alcohol

The popular lie that drinking in moderation is healthy for you is beginning to dissolve. Every recent scientific study concludes that no amount of alcohol is safe.
