I've been to hundreds of AA meetings in my life, and was often told to "find a new meeting." Eventually, I had to find a new support group (SMART Recovery) instead.

One of the main differences between AA and SMART Recovery is that there are no sponsors, and no hierarchy based on how much "sober time" you have. Also, it's fine if you are religious (or not)--but God is not a part of the program.

All of these things--sponsors, hierarchy, God--are hallmarks of a potentially predatory culture. (like religion)

When you add the vulnerability and inexperience of a newcomer who is struggling with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)--that's a recipe for disaster.

At the very least, it makes for a swirling cauldron of bad advice from people who are completely unqualified to give it.
