Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

After a weekend of Halloween shows and festivities, I was excited to sit in as a guest of The 8 Ohms band for a Sunday matinee show at Ramshead Onstage in Annapolis, Md.

If I only knew how the day would unfold.

My good friend Kevin Basiliko, the leader and saxophone player, is also the saxophone player in my band, The Dave Tieff Experiment. He’s had me as a special guest multiple times, and it’s always a blast — but this was one for the scrapbook and bucket list.

As I went backstage to the green room to take my turn onstage, Meghan Basiliko, Kevin’s niece, was also back there awaiting her turn. She had her own sax in hand and was excited to take the stage as she doesn’t perform very often — or often enough.

Meghan joined the band for two songs as I listened in the green room, knowing I would be going up shortly after her. She crushed it, and when she came backstage after her songs, she was beaming.

I know precisely what that rush is like, and it’s just as satisfying to see it on someone else's face.
