Psychedelics & Sobriety: Can They Go Together?
Exploring the pros and cons of mind-altering substances
When Are You No Longer “Sober?”
A few years ago, I attended the 20th sober anniversary of an old friend of mine who was, and still is, a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
AA is where we met, and while I had unceremoniously left the program, I wanted to be there for my friend’s celebration.
When the meeting and celebration concluded, he was busy thanking those who came out, but I wanted to make sure to congratulate him in person.
He looked happy (and surprised) to see me when I approached, but there seemed to be something he wanted to get off his chest.
I congratulated him on his 20 years and gave him a big hug, but with a less than jovial expression, he replied, “Thanks man, it’s been a long road — if you only knew.”
Knowing that I was still sober but no longer attending AA, he began to tell me something that I didn’t think he was comfortable saying to anyone else there.
At least not at his 20-year celebration.
I knew he had gotten a divorce a few years back, but I had no idea what he was about to divulge.
