Words are important.

They are the symbols and signposts we use to arrive at meaning and understanding.

When we use words that are inaccurate, misunderstood, or misleading, we only create more problems — particularly when it comes to sobriety and recovery.

I consider it a blessing and a curse, but I overanalyze the words and sayings I hear.

I ask myself questions like “How old is this saying?” and “Does it apply to current reality?”

Here is a short list of often-heard sayings in Alcoholics Anonymous that deserve scrutiny:

5. “Are they one of us?”

When you hear someone in an AA ask if they’re one of us, that means, “Are they an alcoholic — like us?”
