Top 5 AA Sayings That Are Total BS (Part 2)
Because my last article about AA sayings struck a nerve — with people who could totally relate and, of course, people who were a little upset with me — I figured I would expand the list.
But first, let me say this…
My intention is not to get anyone to leave AA if they are already a happy, sober member. Nor is it to persuade anyone not to try AA in the first place.
My only aim is to point out the things in AA that did not resonate with me. But a funny thing happened the first time I did that outside of an AA meeting.
I realized that there were more than a few people who felt the same — there was a multitude. I found new support groups, online gatherings, and social media communities that support sobriety without the 12 steps.
There are millions of us out there, and most of us have been made to feel guilt or shame at some point for not being able to drink the AA Kool-Aid.
I’m just being rigorously honest — something I learned in AA — along with my favorite AA saying, “To thine own self be true.”
