What George Carlin Would Say About America Today

The longer I live, the more I agree with him

I first heard George Carlin in 1982 when I was 12 years old. We had already gotten on the cable TV train, and Home Box Office was infiltrating living rooms nationwide.

On weekends, I would stay up late so I could watch R-rated movies — or anything else where the cable guide indicated “Nudity.”

This wasn’t bad parenting, my mom (bless her) would be out working her second job waiting tables.

One Saturday night, I stumbled upon “Carlin at Carnegie,” an HBO standup special that featured George Carlin at Carnegie Hall. Even at that tender age, I became an instant fan, and I’ve been a Carlin connoisseur ever since.

To say it was adult material would be an understatement. I can still remember him opening the show by saying, “Have you ever noticed that women who are against abortion are the ones you wouldn’t want to fuck in the first place?”

I knew it wasn’t suited (or intended) for 12-year-olds, but that’s precisely why I kept watching.
